SOPHIA KAYAFAS

 My painting practice has always centered around discovery and experimentation, leaning heavily into listening and responding to the image as it is being painted. Paintings are incredible machines that have the capacity to reveal our own subconscious to us, to change us; to set our inner most parts into motion - telepathically. When viewed in real space, they evolve toward the viewer and collapse time with a technology so understated, they often go unseen" and unappreciated in a world so saturated with images. My paintings tend to take on spiritually symbolic and allegorical notions, and these past few years, I have leaned into intentional world building and strengthened my relationship to my materials. Striking that balance between a contemporary application, and a distilled representation of my experience is an exciting and ever-evolving process.
